Reading architectural plans with AI: start with better questions
A practical way to turn a drawing set into an architect-led conversation.
Start with the drawing, not the answer
Before reviewing a plan, identify its date, revision, scale and purpose. Gather the floor plans, sections and elevations that belong together. A cropped screenshot can hide the legend or the dimension that changes the interpretation.
Separate observation from assumption
Our approach is to record what is visible, what is inferred and what remains unknown. Ask where circulation is unclear, which dimensions are missing and whether room names match the project brief. AI can help organise those questions; an architect reviews them against the supplied documents.
Check the conclusion
NIST identifies confident but incorrect outputs as a risk of generative AI. For a plan review, our practical response is to check every important observation against the drawing and request missing information. A generated statement alone is not a measurement or a technical approval.
Prepare a useful brief
Send a short description of the property, your objectives and the decisions you need to make. Mention the documents available and the points already identified by your design team. We then agree the review scope, deliverables and fee before starting.
